African padauk is a striking tropical hardwood best known for its vivid orange-red to deep reddish-brown colour, which darkens with age and exposure to light. It is a dense, strong and naturally durable timber with a fairly coarse texture, interlocked grain and excellent wear resistance, making it well suited to furniture, turning, decorative joinery, flooring, veneers, musical instruments, tool handles and high-impact craft work.
It machines reasonably well with sharp tools, though the interlocked grain can sometimes cause tear-out, and its strong natural colour can bleed into finishes or surrounding materials if not handled carefully. African padauk is often chosen for visual impact rather than subtlety, but because it is an imported tropical hardwood, responsible sourcing and certification are important considerations.
