Alaska Yellow Cedar

Callitropsis nootkatensis

Alaskan yellow cedar is a pale, fine-textured, naturally durable softwood with low movement, good stability and a distinctive aromatic scent. It works cleanly, holds detail well and is well suited to exterior joinery, cladding, shingles, boatbuilding, carving, signs and refined outdoor craft work.

Alaskan Yellow Cedar is a pale, fine-textured softwood valued for its durability, stability, and clean, understated appearance. Despite the name, it is not a true cedar, but it behaves in many of the ways people want from a premium exterior softwood: it is naturally resistant to decay, relatively slow grown, and has a smooth, even grain that gives it a refined, high-quality feel. Its colour ranges from creamy yellow to light golden brown, often darkening slightly with age.

It is especially useful where light weight, outdoor durability, and ease of working are important. Alaskan yellow cedar machines well, cuts cleanly, holds detail nicely, and is often used for exterior joinery, cladding, boatbuilding, shingles, garden structures, carving, musical instruments, and high-quality craft work. It has a distinctive scent when worked and is generally pleasant to handle, though dust extraction is still important.

For makers and designers, its appeal lies in its balance of performance and subtle beauty. It does not have the dramatic grain of oak or walnut, but it offers excellent reliability, a calm natural colour, and good resistance to weathering. Left unfinished outdoors, it will gradually silver-grey; finished properly, it can retain more of its warm pale tone. As with other imported timbers, responsible sourcing and certification should be considered when specifying it.
