Ayous

Triplochiton scleroxylon

Heartwood tends to be a pale yellow, with the sapwood not clearly differentiated. Colours darken slightly with age. Can be prone to fungal staining if not dried properly. Interlocked grain can give a ribbon-stripe appearance on quartersawn surfaces.

Ayous (Triplochiton scleroxylon)—also sold as obeche or wawa—is a very light West/Central African hardwood with a pale, understated appearance and a soft, easy-cutting texture.

Interlocked grain can produce a ribbon figure on quartered material, but can also lead to slightly rough machining if tools are dull.

Because it is non-durable (Class 5), it’s best for interior use: plywood and veneer, light furniture, carvings and general interior millwork; when modified (e.g., thermally treated) it’s also used for exterior cladding.
