Black Cherry

Prunus serotina

Heartwood is a light pinkish brown when freshly cut, darkening to a medium reddish brown with time and upon exposure to light. Wide sapwood is a pale yellowish color. It is not uncommon for boards to contain at least some sapwood portions along the outer edges.

Black Cherry (Prunus serotina) is a premier North American cabinet hardwood, loved for its smooth machining, fine texture and rich colour that deepens dramatically with age and light. Freshly cut heartwood starts pinkish-brown and matures to a warm reddish-brown; pale sapwood is common and often included for contrast.

Cherry turns, glues and finishes beautifully, making it a favourite for fine furniture, cabinetry, interior trim and veneer—though staining can blotch unless a sealer or gel stain is used.
