European Ash

Fraxinus excelsior

Heartwood is a light to medium brown color, though darker streaks can also be seen, sometimes sold as Olive Ash. Sapwood can be very wide, tending to be beige or light brown; not always clearly demarcated from heartwood.

European ash (Fraxinus excelsior) is a tough, elastic hardwood best known for shock resistance and outstanding steam-bending. It’s ring-porous with a bold grain, typically pale to light brown, and it has that springy feel that makes it a classic for tool handles and sports goods.

In the workshop ash is generally cooperative: it machines cleanly, glues reliably and takes stain well, with the open pores giving strong grain definition under finish. It’s also a good choice when you want a light-coloured hardwood that still has a “muscular” grain pattern rather than a smooth, uniform look.

The trade-off is durability—ash is perishable outdoors and not especially insect resistant, so it belongs indoors or in fully protected conditions. Treat ash as a performance timber for impact and bending, not as an exterior timber, and it’s one of the most useful European hardwoods you can reach for.
