European larch (Larix decidua) is a resinous, moderately durable conifer valued for tougher-than-average softwood performance outdoors. Heartwood runs yellow to reddish-brown with clear growth-ring definition, and boards often carry small, sound knots that give it a lively, traditional look.
In use, larch sits between pine/spruce and the more durable cedars: it’s stronger and more wear resistant than many pale softwoods, and its resin content contributes to natural durability above ground. It machines well, but resin can gum blades and the hard latewood/soft earlywood contrast can make sanding uneven if you’re heavy-handed.
You’ll see European larch in fencing, cladding, exterior joinery and general construction where you want a straightforward “real timber” exterior board without moving into tropical hardwood prices. With good detailing and finishing, it’s a solid, honest exterior softwood with plenty of character.
