European Lime

Tilia × europaea

Pale white to cream colour, with only subtle growth rings. Colour is mostly uniform throughout. Tends to age to a yellow or pale brown over time.

European lime (Tilia × europaea), also called linden, is a pale, fine-textured hardwood prized for how easily it can be shaped. It’s soft, light, and remarkably forgiving under carving tools, which is why it shows up in sculpture, relief carving and detailed interior work where crisp hand-cut surfaces matter.

The grain is subtle and uniform, so lime doesn’t offer dramatic figure—but it does offer control. With sharp cutters it slices cleanly, and it glues and finishes without fuss, making it a favourite for makers who want the wood to disappear behind form and craftsmanship.

Durability is low, so lime belongs indoors. Think of it as a specialist “maker’s timber”: ideal for carving, models, pattern work and interior components, but not a species chosen for strength, wear or weather resistance.
