Sapele

Entandrophragma cylindricum

Heartwood is a golden to dark reddish brown. Color tends to darken with age. Known for a wide variety of figured grain patterns: pommele, quilted, mottled, wavy, beeswing, and fiddleback.

Sapele (Entandrophragma cylindricum) is a popular African hardwood known for rich reddish-brown colour and a wide range of dramatic figureribbon stripe, pommele and quilt among them. It’s often used as a “mahogany alternative,” but the figure and lustre can be more vivid and directional than many true mahoganies.

Its working behaviour is defined by interlocked grain: it can plane beautifully in the right direction, then tear out badly when the grain reverses. Sharp cutters, lighter passes, and paying attention to grain direction are what separate a clean sapele surface from a fuzzy, torn one.

When handled well, sapele finishes to a deep glow and is a superb choice for doors, stair parts, cabinetry, furniture and musical instruments. It’s a timber chosen as much for visual impact as for strength—provided you’re willing to do the surface prep properly.
