Southern Yellow Pine

Pinus palustris (and related spp.)

Heartwood is reddish brown, sapwood is yellowish white.

Southern yellow pine (SYP) is a North American trade group covering several dense pines (including longleaf, loblolly and slash). Compared with many softwoods it’s heavier, stronger and more resinous, with a bold grain and excellent fastener holding.

Those traits make it a structural favourite: framing, beams, joists, poles and heavy-duty decking—often pressure-treated for exterior use. In the workshop it machines well, but resin can gum blades and clog abrasives, so sharp tooling and fresh paper keep it predictable.

Untreated durability is only moderate, but SYP’s treatability is excellent, which is why treated SYP dominates outdoor softwood construction in its home markets. Think of it as a “hard-working pine”: strong, tough, and designed to be used in systems (treatment + detailing) that deliver long service life.
