Sycamore Maple

Acer pseudoplatanus

Sapwood is most commonly used. Colour ranges from almost white to a light golden or reddish brown; heartwood is a darker reddish brown. Can display curly or quilted grain patterns.

Sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus) is a pale European hardwood valued for a clean, bright look and fine, even texture. Most boards are creamy white to light golden, and some logs produce attractive ripple or curly figure that’s prized for instrument and furniture work.

It machines and turns well, but like many maples it can burn under high-speed cutters, and it can blotch if you try to stain it heavily. Clear coats, dyes and controlled toners are usually the most flattering approach if you want colour without patchiness.

Durability is low, so sycamore maple is an interior timber: furniture, joinery, turning and musical instruments. It’s a “clean modern” hardwood—excellent when you want light colour and refinement rather than bold grain.
