White Oak

Quercus alba

Heartwood is a light to medium brown, commonly with an olive cast. Paler sapwood is not always sharply demarcated from the heartwood. Quartersawn sections display prominent ray fleck patterns. Red oak tends to have a slightly redder cast.

White oak (Quercus alba) is a highly regarded North American hardwood combining classic oak character with excellent moisture resistance. It’s ring-porous, but unlike red oak its pores are often blocked by tyloses—one of the key reasons it works for tight cooperage and damp environments.

Visually it’s light to medium brown with an olive cast, and quarter-sawn boards show strong ray fleck with a crisp, architectural grain. It machines and finishes well and steam-bends nicely, making it a genuine all-rounder for furniture, flooring and joinery.

White oak is also one of the few oaks that can realistically cross into outdoor roles when detailed properly. It’s the oak you choose when you want traditional oak looks with a step up in water-handling behaviour and long-term reliability.
